Angara Mahanta whose stage name is Papon was born to a humble Assamese Papon Family. He is a singer, composer, and record producer.
As an Indian playback singer who has given voices to some of the super hit tracks of Bollywood movies like Sultan, Special 26, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Humari Adhuri Kahani, etc.

Papon as a person was born to an Assamese folk singer couple Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta. He has spent most of his childhood in Assam. He was introduced to music early in his childhood.
Papon Family was born in Guwahati, Assam. He initially went for Architecture but later got into Delhi University for BA in English literature. He spent time mostly in Ramjas College and later shifted to Moti Lal Nehru College. He eventually dropped out of college in his final year.
Papon’s foundation training was in Indian Classical, devotional, and folk music.
Papon as a person lives in Mumbai with his wife Shweta Mishra Mahanta. They have two kids. A son named Puhor and a daughter named Parijaat.

Career of Papon
Papon as a person foundation training was in fol music and Indian classical music. He mainly worked on vocals. Some instruments he learned alongside are guitar and harmonium.
Music cover genres including ambient electronic, acoustic, folk, and Indian classical. He has covered gazal as well.
Papon’s musical journey began with an Assamese song named “ Gaantu Je Gaai Asila” from the popular album Aamiu Gao Gaan in 1988.
His first Bollywood number was “Sajna Baware” from the movie Let’s Enjoy.
In 2004 he came up with his first album Junaki Raati.
2012 marked as the entry of his first Hindi Album The Story So Far.
His second Assames album was Sinaaki Osinaak, it was released in 2009.
Papon as a person first folk album was Rangphul a Bihu album, after which he produced Gomseng. Later he came up with Phagunor Gaan an album that represented Holi-themed songs of Barpeta in West Assam.
He has worked on numerous devotional songs like the Borgeet album, songs like Chandamukhi. He has contributed to the folk genre album of Tokari songs.
Jiyen Kyun from the movie Dum Maro Dum was the first biggest hit in 2011 for Papon. After this, he contributed many great songs in Bollywood like:

Papon as a person is the only artist to be a part of all three seasons of Coke Studios MTV. His work on seasons of Coke Studio at MTV has been critically lauded and videos of his tracks have received millions of views on Youtube within a week.
In 2015, Papon Family and The East India Company performed at Oasis in BITS Pilani campus, Dhaka International Folk Fest, and in 2016, he performed at Spree in BITS Pilani Goa Campus.
In 2016, Red Bull came up with a documentary series named “Hometown Heroes”.
In 2018 he sang for Sanjay Dutt in a Rajkumar Hirani movie, “Baba Bolta Hain Bas Ho Gaya”, from the super hit film Sanj, comments on the media dictatorship as well as the difference between real and reel Sanju.

- 2012 Prag Cine Award was presented to him for best playback singer for the title track, Raamdhenu.
- 22nd screen awards 8th Mirchi Music Awards for male vocalist, Both for Moh moh ke dhaage from Dum Lagake Haisha.
- Some other awards were also presented to him for the same contribution like, GIMA Awards 2016 as well as 17th IIFA award.
